Ice Cream Social...TONIGHT!!

Hello good folks of Treadwell! I hope your summer is going well. It has been H-O-T!!! It is expected to rain today, but it will still be hot enough to treat yourself to some ice cream. The above photo is of the old ice cream shop that used to be inside of the Croton House. And while the shop is no longer there, you can come down to ALK tonight at 7:00 p.m. for the Treadwell Ice Cream Social. We will have a very special guest, historical speaker Paul Stillman come and give a visual presentation about the Native American way of life. It promises to be a very tasty and entertaining evening. Hope to see you all there!

Don't forget! The Treadwell Community Improvement Club is hosting the Student Art Awards at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, June 8th at the Treadwell History Center. We had one student win first in New York State, as well as one club woman.

Treadwell Lawn Sale Day is This Weekend!

The weather forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms this weekend, but we all know how quickly the weather can change in our lovely hamlet. So don't let that stop you from coming out to browse the annual Treadwell Lawn Sale Day this Saturday, June 5th! You may find that certain treasure, just like the two little girls seem to have in the above picture.

Put on your browsing shoes, (maybe grab an umbrella) and come see what items your neighbors are selling. Be sure to hit the streets early before all the good stuff is gone! If you get hungry, stop off at Barlow's for a deli sandwich and a pretzel stick.

What a fun weekend and great parade! Helen Mitchell won the Citizen of the Year Award, and was presented a plaque by the Fire Department. Margo Kolenda wrote a great essay and her father did a great job of reciting it in her absence. Emma had a great delivery of the Gettysburg Address, Greg gave a very nice speech, and Father Joachim gave such nice blessings. It was quite muggy, but it was also very nice!

Happy Memorial Day!!!

I hope everyone is excited for the memorial day weekend! While enjoying the good food and great weather, please remember to give thanks to those who have served our country. And what better way to do that than to come out to the Treadwell Memorial Day Parade on May 31st!

The parade begins at 9:00 am and line-up starts at 8:30 am. This year, Greg Furlong, member of the Leatherstocking Honor Flight will be present. Emma Moon will be reading the Gettysburg Address, and we will also hear from the Treadwell Community Improvement Club Citizenship essay winner, Margo Kolenda. Father Joachim, the Abbott of the Treadwell Monastary, will give the Invocation and Benediction.

Oh! and one more reminder: The Bookmobile will be in town June 1st from 2:20-3:00. What a great way to get started on your summer reading!

New Trees in Treadwell!

Those of you walking around town may have noticed the lovely white Birch trees near the Church. Thanks to Dave Tuthill, Bob Klueg, Matt Brydon, Dave Mooney, and Graham Briggs, these trees were planted in less than 1 hour!!!!!!! The Community Improvement Club will be putting in some benches, flowers and, hopefully, a gazebo.

There will be a fund raising drive to help get the gazebo. Any donations are tax-deductible and can be sent to TCIC Box 218 Treadwell, NY.

Treadwell History Center

The Treadwell History Center will be open on May 10th and May 24th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. We have the curtains from the old ALK School on display. Come and see the names and artwork of the kids, and maybe even find your own old masterpiece!

Hello, and Happy Mother's Day! Apparently, we forgot to send a card to Mother Nature...because it is COLD OUTSIDE!!!! Yikes!

Tuesday, May 11th, the Treadwell Community Improvement Club will be holding their meeting at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Oneonta. The meeting will start at 6:00 pm and will discuss elections. Food will be ordered off the menu, and everyone is invited!

December is here...Brrr!

December has arrived, and we all know what that means...Time to hunker down and get ready for the cold! It hasn't quite hit us yet, but it's bound to sooner or later. Hopefully it won't get as cold as it looks in the picture above! What are some of the more colder winters you remember in Treadwell? Which do you think is the coldest month? The first day of Spring is March 20, but that is for the rest of the country. There is no telling when it will reach our lovely hamlet!

Election 2009

Tuesday, November 3rd is election day! To celebrate, the church is having a bake sale at Barlow's from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Be sure to satisfy both your hunger for democracy and sweets and come on down!

September is Here!

Ahh, September! One of my favorite months! Of course it's sad to see summer go, especially as this one was so wet and cold that it didn't even FEEL like summer, but September always seems to bring forward a feeling of fresh start. It's the start of harvest, the start of fall, and of course, the start of school. In celebration of this we will being posting images and memories of A.L. Kellogg school all month long. Some of my favorite memories from school are the huge picture in the cafeteria of a waterfall. There was a little seat in the rock formation and I remember thinking what a cool fort that would make! Also, the great anticipation of waiting to see whether the wooden sign would read "IN" or "OUT" for recess and hearing everyone cheer or boo at the decision. So much fun! And of course, square dancing and recorders. I wouldn't actually say that is one of my favorite memories, but it is definitely something I remember.

Case Hill Road towards Oneonta will be closed daily from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm for road work. Detours can be made on Jackson Hill Road and Rte. 357.

Welcome to the Treadwell, NY blog. This blog has arisen out of the easiest way to share some of the images we have been scanning and archiving for the Treadwell History Center.

Treadwell, NY is undoubtedly a beautiful place to live – and one of the special characteristics of Treadwell is that, although it is charmingly small, it has a large and wonderful history. But Treadwell is not all history – there are lots of exciting happenings actively going on – Stagecoach Run Art Festival, The Community Improvement Club (since 1926), the Firehouse, Bright Hill Press, and, of course, Barlow’s General Store - the heart and hub of Treadwell since 1841.

Our hope is to help add to the community presence online and to give both lifelong and part-time residents a venue to learn and share more about our happy little hamlet.
